CYBERJAYA: Sin Chew Media Group and Sinar Karangkraf Sdn Bhd are each fined RM100,000 by the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) over the incomplete flag and error in the profile of Inspector-General Police respectively.
MCMC said the fines were imposed with authorisation from the Attorney-General’s Chambers where Sin Chew Daily was penalised for publishing an incomplete illustration of Jalur Gemilang on its digital platform while Sinar Karangkraf for an error in the IGP’s profile—describing him as a senior leader of a political party—on its Instagram account.
Both investigations were conducted under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, with penalties under Section 233(2) of the same act.
The fines were issued under Section 243 of the same act.
MCMC said the Malaysian flag represents national sovereignty, unity and dignity, and the flag must always be displayed correctly and with respect.
MCMC also warned that spreading false content involving national security institutions could disrupt public peace and undermine public confidence in enforcement agencies.
In a statement, MCMC further reminded media organisations and social media users to ensure accuracy and authenticity in their published content, especially when official emblems and national symbols are involved.
Sin Chew Daily will appeal against the fine.
