MIRI: A Miri marathon volunteer fell off from a vehicle while he was on duty to check the road condition for the run at 8 p.m. on 12 April.

Yee Wai Shi, 43, who suffered severe head injuries, was rushed to Miri Hospital where he slipped into coma and was diagnosed as brain dead the following day.

The family of Yee Wai Shi decided to fulfil his wish of donating his organs to save other people’s lives when doctors told the family his organs were suitable.

Yee, a marathon volunteer for many years and passionate about charity, had pledged his organs back in 2014.

Without naming him, the Miri Hospital posted on its Facebook last Thursday that this is the first organ transplant in Sarawak for 2025 and the fifth organ donation in Miri Hospital for 2025.

Miri Hospital extended its deepest condolences and sincere gratitude to Yee’s family for their consent to the organ donation, a noble deed that gave someone a new lease of life.

“The family was courageous to make such decision during the most difficult time,” it said.

The gift of life by Yee provided a kidney patient second lease of life when doctors performed a transplant surgery last Wednesday, led by surgeons Dr Aaron Goh and Dr Kamal Raj from Sarawak General Hospital, assisted by a team from the National Transplant Resource Centre comprising Dr Engku Emilia Engku Awang, Mohammad Aliff Abdullah, and urology nurses Siti Zulaikha Md Sidek and Liz Estevera Gabin.

Also in the surgery team were Dr Uma Devi Ramadass from the Organ Procurement Unit of Sarawak General Hospital, along with Miri Hospital’s Tissue and Organ Procurement Team.
