(Petaling Jaya 27 Nov) A new mpox clade II case, which is the second case for this year in Malaysia, has been reported.

The Ministry of Health said the second case was reported on 25 November.

A 34-year-old Malaysian man was abroad in the past 21 days and he was in contact with high risk activities, said the Ministry of Health in a statement.

Since 15 November, the man was showing symptoms of rashes on hand, body and feet.

He sought treatment on 23 November and currently the man is in isolation.

He is reported to be in stable condition.

The ministry is monitoring those in close contact with the man.
It was reported that the ministry confirmed that one positive mpox clade II case had been detected on 16 September.

Since 26 July last year, 11 cases were reported so far.

Mpox is a viral disease, formerly known as monkeypox, before the WHO renamed it in 2022 following complaints that the name was racist and stigmatising.

The zoonotic disease can be transmitted to humans through close physical contact with an infectious person or small wild animal, or via contaminated materials.

Common symptoms include rashes or lesions, along with a flu-like fever, headache, muscle aches, back pain, general weakness, and swollen lymph nodes.
