Lithuanian artist restores iconic murals in Penang
Locals and tourists are crowding around Zacharevic who is repainting “Children on Bicycle” on Armenian Street.

PENANG: Tourists and locals are happy to spot Lithuanian artist Ernest Zacharevic restoring his iconic murals – “Children on Bicycle”, “Boy on Motorcycle” and “Boy on Chair” in Penang.

“It’s him!” Some are excited to see the Lithuanian artist repairing the street murals in Cannon Street (Boy on Chair), Armenian Street (Children on Bicycle) and Ah Quee Street (Boy on Motorcycle).

The artist is seen painting the street murals with his earphones on.

While some are unsure if it is him, the bystanders take the trouble to confirm for those in doubt.

Many are seen taking photographs of Zacharevic repairing the damaged street murals.

Zacharevic is repainting “Children on Bicycle” (L), while another nearby mural “Boy on Chair” has just been repainted.

A few took the opportunity to pat the artist’s shoulder and thanked him for restoring the murals, while others bought him biscuits.

Zacharevic responded with a smile while continuing with his work.

He started repainting the street murals last Wednesday, and has so far completed repainting “Children on Bicycle” and “Boy on Chair”.

Zacharevic was commissioned by the Penang state government to restore the murals after repeated calls from the public to preserve the murals.

He restored the murals way back in 2016 and again in 2019.

The murals, painted as part of the art programmes of George Town Festival 2012, have since become landmarks of the city vastly popular among the tourists.
