KAJANG: A total of 50 people, including foreigners, completed the three-month online class to learn the Hakka Chinese dialect.

This is the fourth online class conducted free-of-charge every Wednesday night from 17 April to 10 July.

Foreign participants from Hong Kong, the United Kingdom, Singapore, Brunei, Australia, Thailand, the United States and China also signed up for the class.

Yong Xiou Hang, chief co-ordinator of the class, said the online Hakka class is also open to non-Hakkas to learn the dialect, conducted by professors from Hong Kong.

“A total of 198 people aged between 10 and 71 attended the class, where 50 of them completed the 12 sessions,” she said.

A hybrid graduation ceremony of on-site and online program was held for the first time for the graduates at Hulu Langat Hakka Association in mid-August.

The online Hakka class was jointly organised by the youth wings of nine Hakka Associations from Hulu Langat, Klang, Petaling Jaya, Sekinchan, Kepong and Balakong.

Other Hakka-linked associations such as Huizhou Associations in Klang and Seri Kembangan as well as Dapu Hakka Clan Association in Klang are joint organisers.
