(PETALING JAYA) The central committee for the application for filming and performance by foreign artistes (Puspal) under the Communications Ministry has not approved South Korean DJ New Jeans Nim’s performance at a dance club on 21 May, on the eve of Wesak Day.

Puspal told Sin Chew Daily that it did not approve the 21 May performance at Gemu Club KL and did not receive the application for another performance in Malacca on 31 May.

On 8 May (Wednesday), Gemu Club KL, on its Facebook page, announced the cancellation of the show scheduled to be held at the club on 21 May.

The performance by Korean DJ New Jeans Nims became controversial as he was dressed as a monk hyping up the crowd on 3 May in a video clip which was shared on social media.

It was reported that the Young Buddhist Association of Malaysia (YBAM) said it received complaints from devotees who believed that the DJ had “harmed and disrespected” the Buddhist way of life with his performance.

Gemu Club at KL, said on its Facebook page that after careful consideration and in the interest of social harmony, the club made a difficult decision to cancel the show.

“This decision was made with the well-being and interest of our patrons and communities in mind.

“We are committed to provide exceptional entertainment experiences and ensure that future events at our premise will continue to uphold our values of respect, inclusivity, and cultural awareness.

“We thank our patrons for their continued support and understanding during this time,” it said.
