By:Sin Chew Daily

We are not going after the brief excitement from a 100-meter sprint, but are committed to running a full Marathon race with our faithful readers. We are setting our sights on goals far and wide.

Sin Chew Daily is entering its 95th year in 2024. Despite the phenomenal changes taking place in the big environment, and the breakneck advancement in technological development, Sin Chew Daily continues to stand steadfastly on this land.

As Media Chinese International Limited Group Chairman Tiong Choon has said, Sin Chew Daily will continue to stay with the Malaysian Chinese community, and justice!

Tiong said, building trust is a long-lasting engineering that can never be achieved overnight. The historical breadth of 95 years marks an important milestone of an era, and we are indeed indebted to our readers for your continued support and trust.

Our conviction is this: we will continue to uphold the spirit of newspaper publication as well as as social justice, our cultural heritage, and human righteousness.

While we have gone through countless of difficulties and tribulations over the past 95 years, Sin Chew Daily has never once stopped voicing up for the local Chinese community, and has continued to churn out quality news reports and commentaries to inspire and motivate the Malaysian reading public.

We offer ourselves as a seedbed of Chinese language education, culture and literary development in Malaysia, in hope of passing down our millennia-old legacy to our children.

In economic and political fields, we are the staunch defender of the rights of Chinese Malaysians.

Sin Chew Daily insists to work closely with the other three pillars of the Malaysian Chinese community — Chinese associations, Chinese businesses and Chinese language education — on issues pertaining to the community, pooling together our strengths and resources to fight for our rights in our respective realms.

Sin Chew Daily has not ceased improving itself over the past 95 years, from black-and-white pages to full color printing and vastly improved layout design for the ultimate reading experience of our valued readers.

We place our utmost priority on providing the most relevant contents to cater to the needs of our readers.

In recent years in particular, we have come up with a couple of new columns including “Seeking Truth” to play the watchdog role in battling misinformation, “Kita” to promote greater national unity among our multicultural population, and “Easily” to mold a physically and mentally healthy Malaysian society.

These initiatives prove that our contents are always at the forefront of societal needs.

The ever-changing time and tide constantly impacts various economic sectors, including the press. The rapid development in technology and social media invariably leaves a sweeping and immense impact on traditional media, forcing many operators to wind up or struggle for mere survival.

That said, facts-based news will live on. Ad long as there are still needs for quality contents, traditional media will not be brought to knees. Any confident and resilient media organization is well aware of the importance of synergistic coexistence, and will seamlessly integrate traditional values and sophisticated new technologies in seeking new directions in order to thrive and prosper, just like Sin Chew Daily.

Sin Chew Daily at 95 bears testimony to the reality that news is still very much alive today, even though it may be presented in many different platforms and assume very diverse forms and shapes.

Offline readers still faithful to physical newspapers will be able to continue pursuing the most reliable news content in a way they are most familiar and comfortable with. In the meantime, the more tech-savvy who enjoy the convenience of real-time information on their smartphones and tablets, will gain access to the latest happenings through Sin Chew’s websites, social media platforms and apps anywhere on the planet where there is network.

Sin Chew Daily can rightly claim that traditional media will not surrender in the face of powerful onslaught from new media. In its stead, we continue to move with the times and harness the latest information technology to continue to serve our readers through a plethora of platforms and channels, attesting to the formidable spirit in newspaper publication that we have inherited.

In the age of Internet, social media users blindly go  after web traffic numbers, and will often be led by the nose by the dazzling traffic numbers in so doing, reducing themselves to mere content farmers at the expense of journalistic morality.

Synthetic AI technology, for instance, is a double-edged sword that can productively augment content generation if used properly, but can also produce disastrous consequences if maliciously abused.

Media operators need to be highly cautious about misinformation and ill-intentioned fake news generated through AI technology that will have perilous effects on the entire world.

As we enjoy the conveniences brought about by modern technologies, we are made to bear the tremendous risks arising from the same.

Such misinformation and spitefully created fake news will readily mislead and confound the public, triggering social conflicts and misunderstandings resulting in misjudgment that could sow the seed of disharmony in society at our slightest negligence, especially when the political and economic climate is depressed, providing irresponsible individuals an excellent opportunity to fan public sentiment.

When this happens, the media is duty-bound to perform its supervisory and checks-and-balances functionalities to ensure that the situation will not go out of hand.

Elaborately cooking up sensitive issues may instantly attract eyeballs and bring short-term benefits, but Sin Chew Daily is insistent on running a long-term business with an acute social and cultural obligation towards the Malaysian Chinese community.

We are not going after the brief excitement from a 100-meter sprint, but are committed to running a full Marathon race with our faithful readers. We are setting our sights on goals far and wide.

During the launch of Sin Chew Daily’s 95th anniversary celebration, Madam Tiong and all in Sin Chew made the pledge to the Malaysian reading public that we will responsibly and courageously perform our journalistic duties, keep learning new things every single day, be culturally self-confident, and always think out of the box.

We vow to turn every crisis into opportunity, and plow on with the undying spirit to serve our readers in unison, and manifest a brand new image for Media Chinese International Limited, as we forge ahead with renewed confidence.

On Sin Chew Daily’s 95th anniversary, we would like to invite all our readers to chart the journey ahead with us together, as we perpetuate the powerful spirit of resilience synonymous with the Malaysian Chinese community.
