PENANG: Rescue Veggie Movement has saved more than 2,000 kg of greens by distributing it to B40 families through Mutiara Food Bank since 21 November last year.
SMJK Convent Datuk Keramat, Penang Prangin Market Traders’ Association, and Persatuan Pemborong Sayur-Sayuran Pulau Pinang collaborate to distribute groceries and vegetables.
A total of 2,653.1 kg of greens has been collected by SMJK Convent Datuk Keramat students from vegetable wholesalers every Tuesday, and handed over the collection to Mutiara Food Bank for distribution to B40 families.
The students are taking part in the Toyota Eco Youth Programme, a collaborative effort between UMW Toyota Motor and the Ministry of Education, to cultivate environmental awareness and encourage respect for the environment among secondary school students.
Penang Deputy Chief Minister Jagdeep Singh Deo praised the collaborative project in reducing food waste by channelling the excess greens and groceries to the needy.
He said this after putting the finishing touch to a mural painting by artist Azmi Hussin and autographing a plaque on the wall of Pulau Mutiara Wholesale Market at Macallum Street Ghaut in George Town on Thursday.
