ALOR SETAR: Wong Chia Zhen is the only non-Muslim executive councillor in Kedah, but he is not going to be a yes-man.
Wong said he will be utilising two platforms – the state exco meeting and the state assembly – to voice out for Chinese and non-Muslims.
“I will voice their needs if the policies need to reflect the views of non-Malays or non-Muslims,” he said.
Wong believes the other nine Kedah executive councillors and Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor would understand as their constituencies are made up of Malaysians of various ethnic groups.
He also said some policies need time and this does not mean the voices of non-Malays are ignored.
“I will fight for a chance to speak. As a state assemblyman, I will not just deliver food basket but to relay the people’s voices to the assembly.
“If a vote is unable to cast an impact, at least the issues are voiced in the assembly,” he said.
Wong said he needed to have good collaboration and communication with nine other state executive councillors so that the policies are drafted in a fair manner.
Wong is in charge of human resources, Chinese, Siamese and Indian affairs and non-governmental organisations.
He is the only assemblyman winning a seat in Kedah under the Gerakan ticket.
Gerakan is with PAS and Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) under the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition.
PN won 33 out of 36 seats in Kedah. Five excos are from PAS and four from Bersatu. Menteri Besar Sanusi is from PAS.
Wong, who is the Kedah Gerakan chairman, won the Kulim seat with a majority of 7,742 votes, defeating Awang Teh from Pakatan Harapan.
Wong garnered 23,278 votes, while Awang received 15,536 votes.
