Gobind likely to contest in Selangor

PETALING JAYA: DAP deputy chairman Gobind Singh Deo, who is also Selangor DAP chairman, is tipped to contest in Selangor election, paving way for him to become a state exco member.

After the plan to field him in Penang to be the next Penang chief minister has been aborted, he is now tipped to contest in Selangor.

The tradition of DAP allows a state chairman to hold both state and parliamentary seats.

It is highly possible for Gobind, who is Damansara member of parliament, to lead the Selangor DAP in state election.

Gobind was the communication and multimedia minister after winning in the 14th general election.

He did not hold any cabinet position after the 15th election.

Sources said Gobind will likely contest the Bukit Gasing state seat as it is seen as the “Indian quota” of the party.

Bukit Gasing is a DAP stronghold with 62.1% Chinese voters.

Rajiv Rishyakaran, the incumbent Bukit Gasing assemblyman, has won the seat twice.

He may be dropped or switched to another state seat this time.

Another Indian seat under the DAP is Kota Kemuning.

If Rajiv switches to Kota Kemuning, a series of chain reactions is like to occur, as the Kota Kemuning incumbent V. Ganabatirau’s brother V. Papparaidu, a potential candidate to replace Ganabatirau, would be re-designated to Banting.

Lau Weng San, the incumbent for Banting, may end up contesting in Bandar Baru Klang or Sungai Pelek.

Exco member Datuk Teng Chang Khim has earlier announced his decision not to defend his Bandar Baru Klang seat.

DAP is expected to announce its candidates Monday afternoon.
