TAIPING: To foster understanding and racial harmony, a kindergarten has invited Muslim and non-Muslim parents to break fast together at Hua Lian Kindergarten on Sunday.

Over 200 adults and children from different ethnic groups were savoring a variety of dishes and delicacies as they experienced an iftar get-together organized by the kindergarten.

Principal Ng Cheng Gim said this was the second time the kindergarten had invited Muslim and non-Muslim families to break fast together for all to know one another and learn about the Muslim culture and customs.

“The parents are responsive to the event. They bring in all types of food – nasi lemak, sandwiches, curry noodles, lemang, fried popiah and drinks to share with others during the event, making the activity even more meaningful,” said Ng.

Mohd Hisham, 36, a policeman who was at the event, said breaking fast together provided a platform for parents to know one another.

“I have no problem breaking fast with non-Muslims. In fact, this helps them understand more about fasting and the reason for fasting,” he said.

Mohd Hisham attended the similar event organized by the kindergarten back in 2019.

40-year-old Chinese driver Tan said this was the first time he and his young son were joining Muslims to break fast at the kindergarten.

“It’s a rare and precious event,” he said.
