PENANG: Good news for parents of children with special needs in Bukit Mertajam.
SJK (C) Perkampungan Berapit is now a Chinese primary school which caters for special education starting March 20.
The school has received approval letter from the Ministry of Education to commence special education class.
Sin Chew Daily learned that more than 30 parents had contacted the school to inquire about the special education class.
Their children with special needs are currently studying at national primary schools.
They can transfer their children to SJK (C) Perkampungan Berapit.
The school decided to apply to the Ministry of Education to commence special education class as no Chinese primary schools in the area offer special education classes.
SJK (C) Perkampungan Berapit has about 263 pupils at this moment.
The school has received allocation from the Ministry of Education to renovate two classrooms for special education.
A ramp has also been built in front of the classrooms to cater for disabled students.
Other Chinese primary schools with special education class are SJK (C) Aik Hua and SJK (C) Shih Chung Pusat in Georgetown and SJK (C) Chong Kuang in Sungai Jawi in Seberang Perai Selatan district.
Bukit Tambun assemblyman Goh Choon Aik once appealed to the Ministry of Education to cater for children with special needs by offering special education at Chinese primary schools.
