PONTIAN: A Chinese employer buys a brand new Proton Saga for his Indonesian worker as a reward, knowing that the worker is troubled by the frequent breakdowns of his old Kelisa.
Yanto, who has worked at the garment factory for more than ten years, was surprised to have received the birthday gift — a brand new Proton Saga bought with cash and registered under his name.
According to his employer Shih Huay Heng, Yanto is one of the pioneers of the factory he set up more than ten years ago.
A dedicated and committed worker, Yanto was promoted to be a supervisor over the years.
He remained in the factory even when the business was affected by the Covid-19 pandemic for more than two years.
Yanto needed a vehicle to send his children to school while he had to send the Kelisa for repair due to frequent breakdowns, which cost him a lot.
His Malaysian wife who used to work at the same factory, quit the job to look after her mother and their two children aged between eight and 12.
Shih’s wife Tan Lay Tin suggested a new car for Yanto so that he could focus on his work and not worry about transport for the family.
Shih, who had booked a car with a Johor Bahru dealer as a birthday gift for Yanto on December 31 last year, did not manage to get the car as it could not be delivered by then.
He then switched to Pontian seeking help from another car dealer after waiting for two months.
Sales representative Koh Hooi Shih told him a 1.3L Proton Saga costing around RM40,000 was available in Pontian, and Shih paid cash for it.
On the day of delivery, Koh tied a big ribbon on the new car while Shih instructed Yanto to visit the car dealer on the pretext of taking a client’s body measurement to tailor a suit.
Yanto was so happy when he found out that the generous employer had bought him a new car.
He hugged the car on the spot!
Koh posted the video on TikTok, saying that this is her second case of employer buying a new car for staff.
