PETALING JAYA: The first batch of imported eggs is selling at 50 sen each.

Mydin Mohamed Holdings Bhd managing director Datuk Dr. Ameer Ali Mydin confirms that the first batch of imported eggs from India is selling at the USJ Mydin in Subang.

A tray of imported eggs is RM14.90 for 30 eggs.

The imported egg is 55 g in weight, which is lighter than type C egg weighing between 55 g and 59 g.

The imported eggs are not subjected to price control and are not categorized by types, he said, adding that imported eggs are more expensive than locally produced eggs.

“The import is to resolve the shortage of chicken eggs now,” he said.

Consumers resorted to buying Omega eggs at 65 sen each due to the shortage, but imported eggs are still cheaper, he said.

Dr. Ameer said the first batch of eggs was air-flown on a trial phase but in future the eggs would be shipped to Malaysia.

“We are testing the response from the market, check the quality of eggs and learn the entire process of inspection,” he said.

The imported eggs are good for one month, he said.

The eggs would take seven to ten days to reach Malaysia, undergo several inspections before hitting the market with the shelf life of two to three weeks, he said.

To address the shortage of egg supply, the Agriculture and Food Security Ministry announced last Friday that the ministry allowed eggs to be imported from India by air on experimental phase to ensure that the eggs meet all the standards set for the use of local market.
