KUALA LUMPUR: Records in parliament will expose members of parliament who are involved in a conflict of interest, says DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke Siew Fook.
Defending Yeo Bee Yin, who is DAP’s candidate for Puchong parliamentary seat, Loke said all votes and decisions made in parliament were recorded.
“People will know whether there is a conflict of interest committed by Yeo Bee Yin.
“She has responded and I feel that she has given her reply in details.
“We do not avoid the issue. It is public information of her husband, IOI Properties Group chief executive Lee Yeow Seng. Everyone is aware of this. Why raise the issue now?”
Loke said some of the criticisms were not objective, as the IOI Group has businesses in many parts of the country that she cannot contest a parliamentary seat if IOI is doing business there.
“Even if she is contesting in Labis, IOI also has business there,” said Loke.
Yeo was also the minister for energy, science, technology, environment and climate change in the Pakatan Harapan government from 2018 to 2020.
She married Lee whose late father Lee Shin Cheng founded the IOI Group, one of the country’s largest developers and plantation companies.
Anti-graft group The Center to Combat Corruption and Cronyism (C4 Center) expressed concern of an alleged conflict of interest as Yeo is a candidate for Puchong parliamentary seat.
C4 said IOI Properties had a “major presence” in neighboring constituencies and other parts of Klang Valley, and asked how Yeo would vote in parliament on matters that do not serve the interests of IOI Group.
C4 had said earlier that IOI Group has stakes in “massive land areas” across the Puchong constituency. Its main investment properties include IOI Mall Puchong, IOI Boulevard Puchong, Sheraton Puchong and the Puchong Financial Corporate Center.
However, Yeo has pointed out that all these properties are not lying within the Puchong constituency, and that the seat does not include certain areas of Puchong.
She said many parliamentary seats bear names that do not reflect the named localities.
