Robert Kuok regains as Malaysia’s richest man

KUALA LUMPUR: Sugar King Tan Sri Robert Kuok regains his status as the richest man in Malaysia after Tan Sri Quek Leng Chan, the founder of Hong Leong Group, overtook Kuok for only one day in the Forbes’ List of Malaysia’s 50 richest.

Kuok’s wealth increased overnight by RM200 million (US$44 million) to be the No. 1 on Forbes’ List of Malaysia’s 50 richest.

Quek was No. 1 on Forbes’ List of Malaysia’s 50 richest for one day.

The real-time Billionaire’s List under Forbes showed Kuok at 180th in the list of the world’s richest man with the latest increase of 0.47% in his wealth to reach RM44.9 billion ($9.5 billion).

Kuok, 99, lost the crown to 81-year-old Quek as the share price of Shangri-La Asia Limited listed in Hong Kong owned by him nosedived on Monday.

The share price was up by 4% on Wednesday while the Yihai Kerry Arawana Holdings Co listed on Shenzhen Stock Exchange rebounded by 2.7% from its lowest point.

Quek’s wealth of RM44.5 billion ($9.4 billion) returns him as the second richest man in Malaysia although his global ranking has slipped from 179th to 183rd.

Ranked 477th globally, Public Bank Group founder Tan Sri Teh Hong Piow remains the country’s third richest man with RM24.6 billion ($5.2 billion) in assets.
