GEORGETOWN: A 50-year-old popiah seller who is looking for a wife through a social media post has received more than ten calls in the last two days.
However, the callers are single mothers aged 42 years and older, not meeting his requirement of “single women aged between 35 and 40”.
Tay Soon Teik, who sells popiah at Padang Brown, Datuk Keramat, said no one came to his stall but he received calls from Kedah, Perak, Johor, Kuala Lumpur and Melaka.
Only one caller was from Penang.
The Penang caller, 42, is a divorcee whose two children are living with her ex-husband.
She asked whether Tay had a house and a car and whether she would have to stay with his mother after they get married.
Tay said he was puzzled by a series of questions from her.
The other callers, meanwhile, did not ask him about his financial position but were keen to keep in touch with him.
Tay said his mother was unhappy after knowing that he had looked for a life partner by placing an advertisement on social media, for fear he would become a laughing stalk.
He nevertheless reiterated that he would not bother how other people would judge him.
He is making his last attempt to look for a wife this round, as he has previously placed matrimonial advertisements every four years but none has borne any fruits thus far.
Tay said this time he had received a lot of support and encouragement in search for a wife.
Patrons have dropped by his stall to buy his popiah to show their support.
He said he had sold 100 pieces of popiah by 2pm on Wednesday.
“I hope to find a wife, and I also hope for someone to one day inherit my popiah stall,” he said.
He said he was looking for someone to spend the rest of his life with.
A hawker for 30 years, Tay claimed that he was financially stable and owned properties on the island worth over a million ringgit.
So, anyone who will become his wife will never have to live a difficult life.
He has no other requirements apart from the fact his future wife must be a Chinese, as requested by his mother.
Tay said if he could not find a wife in the next two years, he would retire and let his sisters and their children inherit his properties.
He hopes that women would drop by his stall to get to know him or contact him at 011-5992-3019. He will be at the stall from 9.30am to 4.30pm daily, except Monday.
It was reported that Tay’s latest matrimonial advertisement uploaded onto a Penang-based Facebook group on 18 April, generated some interest with around 60 comments in less than a day.
