KUALA LUMPUR: A committee set up by Malaysia Funeral Public Association has contributed 11 coffins for the poor and underprivileged since 2020.
Its president Kong Thian Hau said many are unaware that the association offers free bereavement services, including donating coffins for the poor.
Kong said once the association’s committee has verified the case, it will arrange for the funeral services.
“The bereaved family does not need to raise any fund for the funeral,” he said in a statement.
The association is a non-profit organization formed by people in the funeral services and bereavement care as well as individuals.
In line with the traditional Chinese custom of providing the deceased a funeral as a completion, the association started to promote contributing coffins and funeral services at no charge for the poor as a charitable project in 2019.
With funds donated by members of the public, Kong said the association accepts applications for coffins and funeral services from people unable to pay for the services.
“This is our way of mobilizing members of the public to extend a helping hand to the poor,” he said.
