TELEMONG, Jan 2 (Sin Chew Daily) — Two weeks after Sungai Perdak new village in Pahang was hit by a “timber tsunami” and the floods which have damaged the villagers’ homes, the logs remain uncleared.

More than 30 families or about 75 inhabitants of Sungai Perdak lost their homes during the December 18 floods.

Two homes were swept away by the flood waters while many homes were badly damaged. About seven families were still seeking temporary shelter at a Chinese temple in Telemong.

Thu Yin Li, head of Sungai Perdak new village, said the entire village was almost covered by logs carried by the flood waters.

“We need heavy machinery to remove the logs,” she said.

For the past two weeks, many volunteers have helped the villagers clean up their homes, while individuals and non-profit organizations contribute food and flood relief items.

Fire and rescue volunteers from Telemong also helped clear the one-foot high mud in the village.

“The entire village is almost covered by heavy logs. We need heavy machinery to remove them and clear the thick layer of mud which is one foot high,” she explained.

Thu has appealed to the authorities and good Samaritans to send heavy equipment to the new village to remove the logs and the thick layer of mud in post-flood clean-up.

The village is still without the water and electricity supply.

About five to six houses have completed the cleaning but many houses are still surrounded by logs.
