President of alumni association of Taiwan universities quits over corruption

PETALING JAYA, Oct 30 (Sin Chew Daily) — Ang Boon Chin steps down as the president of the Federation of Alumni Association Of Taiwan Universities Malaysia with immediate effect and apologizes over a corruption case.

Ang attended an event organized by the federation on Saturday but did not deliver a speech.

He decided to tender his resignation with immediate effect after discussing the matter with some committee members. His deputy Datuk Dr Tang Yong Chew will take over until the next election.

Under the Corruption Offender Database on the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission website, Ang, 60, was sentenced to 30 days’ jail and RM30,000 fine on April 15 this year in a sessions court in Shah Alam for an offense under Section 214 of the Penal Code.

Ang was charged for bribing Mohamad Saiful Azri Mohd Fouzi, an assistant officer at the Land and District Office in Klang with RM10,000 on March 23.

The bribery was paid for not taking action against his company Gallex Enterprise (M) Sdn Bhd which was under investigation for trespassing the government’s land in Pandamaran Industrial Area under Section 425(1) of National Land Code.

When approached by reporters, Ang apologized and said he quit to shoulder responsibility.

“I have delayed the matter due to the Movement Control Order and I have not been well too,” he said.

According to the constitution of the Federation of Alumni Association Of Taiwan Universities Malaysia, one loses the qualification as a committee member if convicted with more than RM2,000 fine in criminal of fences as stated in the Registrar of Societies Act.

Ang said he would continue to serve the federation if his service was needed.
