Govt urged to help 10,000 Malaysian students unable to resume studies in China
Koay Poay Tiong (C) urges the government to negotiate with China for Malaysian students to return to their universities. Beside him is Chan Foong Hin (L) and Teh Kok Lim.

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 3 (Sin Chew Daily) — A member of parliament (MP) has urged the government to look into the plight of 10,000 Malaysian students and arrange for them to resume their studies in universities in China.

The students have been stranded at home and unable to resume their studies in China due to the COVID-19 pandemic since early last year.

Some of them are recipients of scholarships awarded to them which could be withdrawn while some are unable to participate in practical training due to shutdown of borders.

At a press conference at the parliament lobby, Kota Melaka MP Khoo Poay Tiong and Kota Kinabalu MP Chan Foong Hin called urged the government to assist the students.

“We hope the government will view this matter seriously and take the initiative to approach China for the students to be given permission to return to campus,” they said.

Koay said some of the foreign students studying in China were able to enter China due to the proactive approach taken by their governments.

Koay said he raised the matter in his debate on Budget 2021 last year and then foreign minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein said he would resolve this matter.

However, there has been no progress up till today, he said.
