PETALING JAYA, Apr 9 (Sin Chew Daily) — A total of ten Hong Kongers who are residing in Malaysia join the locals to prepare and pack food for the underprivileged.
They volunteered at Kantin Mu Zi in Kepong at the end of March, as shown in a video uploaded on YouTube on April 2.
Some also chipped in donations to support the canteen besides helping out at the canteen.
The canteen operator shared the video on Facebook and was glad to have foreigners volunteer for a day.
Three of them continued to volunteer at the canteen for two days and promised to help one or two days every week.
Founded by Malaysian Li Zhi Gang, Kantin Mu Zi delivers an average of 300 packs for vegetarian food to the needy. The canteen also tries to help orphanages and disabled homes.
Good Samaritans have donated vegetables to the canteen, while volunteers would sort out the greens to donate to the needy.
Li, who is also a vegetarian, said Kantin Mu Zi would like to assist more people and had opted to open a canteen in an area surrounded by low-income groups.
Li named the canteen after his mother's surname which shares the same pronunciation as vegetarian food.
Li said the canteen, which operates from Monday to Friday, promotes vegetarian food. It opens during weekends only on the first and 15th days of the lunar calendar.
Through vegetarian food, Li said the canteen helped the poor to save money on food.
"If you wish to buy a school bag and a pair of shoes for a child, you can have your meals at Kantin Mu Zi for RM5. By having ten meals, you save RM50, and RM100 for 20 meals. You can then buy a pair of shoes and a school bag with the RM100 saved," he said.
Kantin Mu Zi also helps single mothers who are unable to pick up food by arranging for deliveries.
Kantin Mu Zi welcomes volunteers. For those who are interested please contact Sun: 019-477-1563.
