PETALING JAYA, Mar 15 (Sin Chew Daily) – The legendary Chinese herbal pork rib soup from Malaysia now has an official Malay name.
Sin Chew Daily's readers have decided that this famous food should be called "Bak Kut Teh".
Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP) earlier authorized the Chinese Language Standardization Council of Malaysia to provide an official Malay translation for this dish, and the council has since launched a joint survey with Sin Chew Daily among its readers and the general public.
The council's exco chairman Datuk Goh Hin San said he would submit the poll result and report to the council's chairman Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon, who is also deputy education minister.
The proposal will then be discussed in the eight-man consultative committee jointly set up by the council and DBP, before the name is officially adopted by the DBP.
The official Malay translation will be used by the government, including the tourism ministry, for the promotion of Malaysian delicacies to foreign tourists.
1,298 people took part in the poll and 74.7% chose "Bak Kut Teh" as the Malay name for this dish.
Meanwhile, 14.9% of participants opted "Bah Kut Teh".
