Minister in tears over old man living in ruins

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 26 (Sin Chew Daily) — It is no longer a home after a fallen tree damaged the structure ten years ago, but an old man has been living in the ruins for the past ten years!

The room is covered with canvas and the roof leaks whenever it rains. The damaged home is without water and electricity supply.

Federal territories minister Tan Sri Annuar Musa weeps as he visits Liang Zhong Qiang in a new village in Salak South.

Annuar admitted that he had never seen such terrible condition as an elected representative for many years.

Liang shifted to the wooden house with his parents and siblings at the age of 15 in 1972.

A tree fell onto the house ten years ago. Liang and his five siblings could not afford to repair the house.

They were moved to a community hall while waiting for arrangements for a low cost flat.

The siblings were forced to return to the damaged home as there was no news for the flat.

Liang's application had been pending for the past ten years and the condition of the damaged house has deteriorated over the years.

His siblings later moved out from the house several years ago when they found jobs that offered them accommodation or rented a place to stay. Liang has been the only one living in the house since then.

Liang, an odd job worker, relies on his neighbor, a small factory to supply him the electricity and he draws the water from a well.

Liang used to earn more than RM1,000 a month as a plumber and renovation worker, but lost his income during the Movement Control Order.

A resident nearby delivers him food on a daily basis after learning about his plight.

Liang hopes to move into a low cost flat so that he can live with his siblings who are now living in Pudu and Cheras.

Philanthropist Kuan Chee Heng, popularly known as Uncle Potato, received a tip-off by a member of public six days ago and made the arrangement for Liang to temporarily live in Puchong.

Kuan also told minister Annuar about Liang.

Annuar was accompanied by Kuan to visit Liang. Stunned by the ruins, he promised to help Liang move into a low cost flat as soon as possible as the dilapidated house is no longer fit for one to live in.
