Johor Bahru, Apr 27 (Sin Chew Daily) — A management training lecturer from China has become a citizen journalist providing updates on Malaysians returning to Johor Bahru from Singapore across the Causeway on foot.

From his highrise apartment, Li Chaojie takes videos of people walking across the Causeway on a regular basis, and uploads them on Facebook.

One of the visuals showing a couple walking under heavy rain has gone viral, with the pregnant wife turning back every now and then to look at her husband carrying several bags behind her. In less than two days, the visual was shared more than 1,300 times and had over 36,000 views.

Li was shocked by the high number of viewings. He thanked the support of netizens and later named himself "fortunate to have you" on the social media.

Li also accepted requests by netizen Qiu Xiang Yang to record video of his girlfriend walking back from Singapore with a Winnie the Pooh soft toy and her luggage.

Li Chaojie's videos are typically 7 to 10 minutes long each.

During an interview with Sin Chew Daily, Li said he bought a highrise apartment at R&F Princess Cove in 2017.

Last year, he spent Chinese New Year in Johor Bahru, and this year, he was holidaying in JB after Chinese New Year and planned to return to Beijing in March.

However, flights were canceled due to the MCO enacted by the Malaysian government.

He was so bored at home that he started to set up a Facebook account in early April. Facebook is banned back in China.

Li has uploaded videos of foot traffic on the Causeway to some local Facebook groups.

He saw that Malaysians leave Johor for work in Singapore every day, and this has reminded him of his 4-hour daily commutes on public transport back in Beijing years ago.

Li uses Huawei P20 to take the videos of the Causeway traffic from his apartment and uploads them on several social media groups to provide updates for road users.

On April 19, he set up the "Malaysian workers' station in JB" and uploaded the traffic conditions on the Causeway at 10:00 and 15:00 every day, as requested by netizens.

During the past few days, some netizens have made prior arrangements with him to record the videos of them walking crossing the Causeway from Singapore to JB.

There are others who have requested him to convey the message to the Malaysian government in order to provide buses for Malaysians returning from Singapore.

Li and his wife now miss their home in Beijing as their flights were canceled twice. They plan to return to Beijing on April 28.

Li says he would continue sharing information from China on his views after leaving Malaysia.

He loves the nature and colorful customs of Malaysia, and his favorite pastime here is diving.

He will come back to Malaysia for short stays on a regular basis.

Li Chaojie hopes to offer the people some help through Facebook.
