RM2.25m raised for Lim Lip Eng’s libel suit

PETALING JAYA: Kepong member of parliament Lim Lip Eng announces the end of fund-raising after hitting the target of RM2.25 million.

In a video posted to cpnews161 YouTube channel, Lim thanked the support thrown behind him by members of the public.

“I once helped a homeless old man. He passed RM200 through a DAP member to me. I was weeping inside. I have nothing to give him in return,” said Lim.

He also said he received donations from hawkers, school worker, temporary staff at a fast food restaurant and even an old lady who took a bus from Setapak to his service center.

Lim said he promised to channel the donation for charity if he succeeds in his appeal.

He also posted on Facebook that the donations would be audited for transparency.

“I will continue to speak up for justice,” he said.

In 2019, MonSpace (M) Sdn Bhd director Datuk Seri Jessy Lai Chai Suang filed a defamation suit against Lim for allegedly making multiple statements, including one after he and several Chinese nationals visited the company’s headquarters in Bukit Jalil on May 23, 2017.

Last Thursday, Judge Datuk Akhtar Tahir ordered Lim to pay RM1 million in damages to the company and another RM500,000 to Lai.

Besides, the court also ordered him to pay RM500,000 in total of aggravated damages to the company and Lai. In addition, Akhtar ordered Lim to pay costs of RM250,000.

Lim has filed the notice of appeal but will still need to settle the damages pending appeal.
