Only 3 Umno MPs agree to withdraw support for PN govt

KUALA LUMPUR, July 6 (Sin Chew Daily) – According to a source, only three of Umno's members of parliament agree to withdraw their support for the Perikatan Nasional government, including party president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Last night, some 29 Umno MPs attended a meeting chaired by Ahmad Zahid at senior defense minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob's office at 9.00p.m.

A source told Sin Chew Daily Ahmad Zahid wanted Umno MPs to withdraw their support for the PN government today, but only three agreed to do so, namely Ahmad Zahid himself, former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, and Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan.

"Among the reasons the other MPs objected to it was it's now time to fight the virus, not to bring down the government.

"Moreover, the King will not allow general election to be held at this crucial moment of pandemic, so it will be meaningless to withdraw their support for the PN government.

"If they quit the government now, many MPs will not have access to the resources and allocations needed to fight and win the election war."

The source said Umno also needed to take into account the will of other BN allies such as MCA, MIC and PBRS.

According to the source, Umno will hold a supreme council meeting tomorrow evening, but he is unsure of the agenda.

Meanwhile, another Umno supreme council member told Sin Chew Daily all major party decisions must be made through proper channels such as the supreme council meeting, not through unilateral agreements made privately between party president and individual MPs.
