Open burning banned in Selangor with immediate effect

SHAH ALAM, March 10 (Bernama) -- Natural Resources and Environment Minister Datuk Seri G. Palanivel today announced that all areas in Selangor are prohibited from open burning with immediate effect until further notice.

He said the prohibition however, does not involve cremation, burnings related to religion, grills or barbecues and gas flaring.

"Following this, all parties are advised not to engage in open burning or allow heir land or premises to be trespassed by any irresponsible parties leading to pen burning either intentionally or unintentionally," he said in a statement here.

Palanivel said anyone found guilty of open burning could be sentenced to jail for five years or fined a maximum of RM500,000 or both.

He also urged the public throughout the country to cooperate and put out small fires and report any cases of open burning or fire to the Fire and Rescue Department by calling 999 and the Department of Environment at the toll free number 1-800-88-2727.
