Rais calls for mobile content of Malaysian values, cultures

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 20 (Bernama) -- Datuk Seri Rais Yatim has urged Malaysian mobile content and service providers to create content reflecting Malaysian values and cultures.

The information communication and culture minister noted that as international companies rushed to create mobile content and services to meet new demands, Malaysian companies bore the responsibility to act swiftly.

"Good local content will help keep our culture and values alive for future generations. I am pleased to see that this conference will address this area,"

"I look forward to seeing the 1Malaysia topic spurring productive consultation on the development of content and services for all Malaysians.

"In the same light, the government is ever ready to explore mobile services and applications that can help it improve the delivery of government services to the people," he said when opening the Go Mobile 2009 conference here today.

Later, at a news conference, Rais said the high charges imposed by certain state governments and local councils to instal telecommunication towers had thwarted government efforts to provide consumers with mobile services at affordable rates.

Apart from that, he said, the difficulty in obtaining approval for the installation also made it difficult for suppliers to provide better services to their clients.

"As such, we will request the menteris besar and chief ministers meeting to take this issue as an agenda (at the meeting)," added Rais.
