KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 16 (Sin Chew Daily) -- DAP Socialist Youth (Dapsy) and Gerakan Rakyat have issued separate statements today in support of Universiti Malaya students Wong Yan Ke and Edan Kon Hua En.

They also urged Universiti Malaya vice chancellor Datuk Abdul Rahim Hashim to resign for making racist remarks at Malay Dignity Congress and mishandling the students' protests.

The statement signed by 21 Dapsy leaders reprimanded the vice chancellor for keeping mum after the students were roughed out by former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak's supporters outside the campus, making racist remarks at Malay Dignity Congress, lodging police report against Wong in violation of the student's freedom of expression, and barring Kon from attending his convocation and receiving his scroll.

Meanwhile, Gerakan Rakyat president Datuk Dominic Lau Hoe Chai said in a statement although the party did not encourage protests at the convocation ceremony, the university authorities should not oppress the students nor bar any graduate from attending the convocation ceremony.
