Cabinet condemns boycott of non-Muslim products

PETALING JAYA, Sept 5 (Sin Chew Daily) -- The cabinet issued a statement through the prime minister's office Wednesday to condemn the irresponsible move by some individuals and organizations calling for the public to boycott products of non-Muslim companies.

Instead, the cabinet urged the public to support products made in Malaysia, as this would benefit the national economy.

Some Muslim NGOs started a boycott campaign on social media last week, which was initially intended to call for support of products made by Muslim companies but later developed into an anti non-Muslim products campaign.

According to a source, the cabinet discussed the issue in yesterday's meeting.

“The cabinet does not endorse such a campaign. Instead, we fully support products made by Malaysians regardless of race or religion.

“Why boycott non-Muslim or non-bumi products? This will only hurt our economy!”

A source told Sin Chew Daily the cabinet had instructed the domestic trade and consumer affairs ministry to initiate a campaign to encourage Malaysians to buy locally manufactured products.

The source also said the cabinet would not take any action against the Muslim NGOs calling for boycott of non-Muslim products for the time being.

Nevertheless, he said the government would closely monitor individuals trying to issue hate speeches and would take the necessary actions against those novelized.
