PM: Zakir won't be deported for the time being

  • Mahathir says the government will not send back Zakir Naik for the time being.

PUTRAJAYA, Aug 23 (Sin Chew Daily) -- Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said the government would not send back Indian Muslim preacher Zakir Naik for the time being.

Tun Mahathir earlier said if Zakir had not caused any trouble in the country, he would not be sent back.

He also said if Zakir were to be deported, he would face the risk of being killed. Moreover, he has been granted permanent residency in Malaysia.

Prior to this, several cabinet ministers, including communication and multimedia minster Gobind Singh Deo, human resources minster M. Kulasegaran and water, land and natural resources minister Xavier Jayakumar have said Zakir must not remain in Malaysia.
