KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 8 (Sin Chew Daily) –- DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said in a statement today that the cabinet made the decision yesterday that Seni Khat would only be an optional subject.

Of course, he said, this would not satisfy everyone, including those from the non-Malay communities who had wanted the plan to introduce Jawi calligraphy at vernacular schools to be deferred until a consensus is reached between the government and local Chinese and Tamil education organizations.

“A decision was made yesterday that it will not be a compulsory subject and is not examinable. It is hoped that this will help us move on.

“Malaysians from all walks of life should step up communication in order to understand what is dividing us and what is bringing us together," he said.
