IPOH, Aug 2 (Sin Chew Daly) -- Keranji state assemblyman Chong Zhemin and Jelapang state assemblyman Cheah Poh Hian, the two DAP Perak state assemblymen who signed the joint statement on Wednesday against the inclusion of Jawi in Bahasa Malaysia textbooks, announced today their withdrawal from the joint statement.

The duo said in a statement today that they had decided to withdraw from the joint statement in order to give their party leaders and the education ministry more time and space to discuss this matter.

They also expressed reassurance that party leaders were willing to listen to differing views on this issue.

When contacted by Sin Chew Daily, Chong said they withdrew from the joint statement because it had already served the purpose of drawing the attention of party leaders and education ministry to this matter.

He also said the measure had not yet been finalized, awaiting further decisions from the education ministry and party leadership.
