Jawi: concerns unwarranted, says DAP rep

  • DAP's Teratai assemblyman Lai Wai Chong says there is no difference between religious extremists criticizing cruciforms on buildings and opponents to the inclusion of Jawi calligraphy in BM textbooks.

PETALING JAYA, Aug 1 (Sin Chew Daily) – DAP's state assemblyman for Teratai Lai Wai Chong said there was no difference between religious extremists criticizing cruciforms on buildings and opponents to the inclusion of Jawi calligraphy in Bahasa Melayu textbooks.

When contacted by Sin Chew Daily, Lai said he could see that many people were reluctant to find out the details before slamming the government for incorporating Jawi in BM curriculum.

According to the education ministry's proposal, new BM textbooks will only have six pages on Jawi calligraphy or Khat, not an entire textbook. Moreover, students will not be tested for their Jawi mastery.

“The six pages of content only provides a very basic introduction to Khat.

“We can actually talk about this issue sensibly. But, did we?

“We need to understand more about this whole thing before jumping to any conclusion,” he asserted.
