JAKARTA, March 15 (MySinchew) -- Indonesia's meteorological department warned that the western and central parts of the country would experience prolonged hot and dry spell in March and April owing to El Niño, making them more prone to forest fires.

Mulyono Rahadi Prabowo, head of public meteorology, the Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics, said due to reduced rainfall in Riau province in March and April, the probability of forest fires had become significantly higher while eastern Kalimantan was also prone to forest fires.

Indonesia's weather will have a 50% chance of being affected by La Nina phenomenon in the fourth quarter of this year. As a result, the "drought" season this year is expected to be unseasonally wet.
