Thick haze to dissipate temporarily until Sunday: minister

PUTRAJAYA, Oct 6 (Bernama) -- The thick haze which has shrouded the nation is expected to lighten up until this Sunday due to the more humid weather and weak wind strength in the region, said Natural Resources and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar.

He said the Mujigae Tropical Typhoon which entered the land areas and was now within 500 km west of Guangzhou, China, had caused wind strength in the region to weaken and blow in several directions.

He said in view of this, weather conditions in the region were expected to be humid with rains and thunderstorms in one or two places throughout the country in the afternoons and evenings.

"It is expected that up till this Sunday, Peninsular Malaysia will not have the haze.

"However, Sarawak is expected to experience the haze from tomorrow until Friday and it will lessen from Saturday due to the changes in wind direction," he told reporters after chairing a special meeting on the haze, here today.

He added that the haze which resulted from open burnings in Indonesia, was expected to end by the end of November.

Earlier, wan Junaidi also distributed face masks to motorists at the Maju Expressway (MEX) toll plaza in Putrajaya.
