353 hot spots detected in Sumatra

PEKANBARU (Riau) Oct 8 (Bernama) -- Around 353 hot spots of forest and plantation fires were detected across Sumatra island on Wednesday, a rise of 75 from the previous day.

Head of Pekanbaru Meteorological, Climatology and Geophysics Office Sugarin said the majority of hot spots were detected in South Sumatra, Indonesia's Antara news agency reported.

South Sumatra has 284 hot spots, Jambi 26, Riau 24, Bangka Belitung 10 and Lampung nine.

In Riau province, 24 hot spots were detected on Wednesday, up from four on Tuesday.

The hot spots were detected in Indragiri Hilir (18), Rokan Hulu (three), Pelalawan (two) and Indragiri Hulu (one).

The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) will carry out cloud seeding operations to create artificial rain using a C-130 Hercules aircraft to extinguish forest fires in Sumatra and Kalimantan.

The exercise will be carried out throughout October.

Cloud seeding has been carried out in provinces of Riau, South Sumatra and Central Kalimantan.
